Novomatic Launched Lava Loot Pokie Machine

lava loot logoLava Loot is a 5×3 pokie by Novomatic, themed around prehistory. And a volcano. The volcano is kind of a big deal here, as the title may suggest. The reel symbols include a prehistoric couple (a caveman and cavewoman, no Adam and Steve type of couples here), and a number of dinosaur-like creatures.

At least I think they’re dinosaurs. Honestly, the designs are so cartoonish it’s hard to tell what they are. But I digress. Lava Loot, despite a visual design that borders on crude, has some rather neat special features which should prove very appealing for many a player out there.

The Novomatic Group, the people behind Lava Loot, are a large gambling corporation, that not only is involved in game development, but they also produce casino cabinets, operate online betting networks, and they even run several physical casinos in different countries. Novomatic was founded in Austria, in 1980, and they have just gotten bigger and bigger over the years.

What We Love

Although we’re not big fans of the visual design and overall theme, Lava Loot’s control layout definitely wins us over. Instead of the traditional scheme with buttons and displays along a bar down the bottom, Lava Loot has a much more simplified layout.

The spin button is located on the right-hand side; you press for spin, and hold for auto play. A menu button lies just on top of the spin button, and there you can adjust your bet level, the number of pay lines you’re playing on, and other minor settings.

The actual features of this game are very nice. Our favorite is one that is appearing on a number of new games lately, the gamble feature. If you’re unfamiliar with this, you might think “I’m already gambling, this sounds silly”, but turns out you can gamble while you gamble.

After every win on a regular spin, you will have to choose between collecting your money, or going double or nothing on a card-guessing mini game.

The mini game is simple; you only have to guess the color of a random playing card. We presume the odds are 50/50, and we’ve seen other games do this with a coin toss. Guess correctly, and you can go up to five rounds of the mini game, doubling your wager with each win.

The other special features are the Lava Loot Bonus and the Big Wild feature. Lava Loot Bonus is the name this game gives to free spins, and you unlock them by landing bonus symbols, at least 3 of them. Bonus symbols also pay the jackpot on a 5 of a kind combination, so be on the lookout.

During the bonus rounds, wild symbols that expand downwards, like creeping lava, will appear on the reels. The creatively named Big Wild is just that, a big wild that takes up the three center reels, activated at random during regular play.

What We Do Not Like

The game’s visual design is a turn-off for us. I get that it’s probably meant to look fun and whimsical, but it just looks a bit shoddy. The theme itself is ok, but not that inspiring. And the dinosaur-like things puzzle me.

I’m pretty sure they’re meant to be dinosaurs, but just look like a prettied up version of toddler’s drawing of a dinosaur. Other than some minor visual eyesores, there’s not much to dislike here.

Worth Playing?

Assuming poor design is something you can live with (and if you’re an avid pokies player, you’ve seen your fair share of substandard visuals, I’m sure), Lava Loot is a fantastic game, with fun features, and a surprisingly clean UI. This game is definitely worth a try.
